Last year at this time (December, 2018) we were experiencing our Grand Vacation in Grand Teton National Park. This year we'll have another Grand Vacation - this time trading mountains for canyons, looking down instead of up and visiting the Grand Canyon!
Back in October we were discussing our extended Christmas break and the possibility of another Rahn adventure. I wanted to head into the cold again and after some secret conversations with Don and about 2 hours on the computer pricing things out and trying to work some magic with deals and flight miles, we approached the girls with our plan:
We head to the Grand Canyon and surroundings for 4 nights!
Of course they agreed and the planning began. Winter in the Grand Canyon area was hit or miss and the crowds were advertised as much less than in the summer season. To quote an article I read,"Consider it (winter) the Grand Canyon’s secret season. The dead of winter — December through February — is surprisingly lively at the canyon’s South Rim, which is open year round. Even if you’ve visited in summer, it’s worth considering a trip in the off-season for a wholly different perspective on this world wonder."
So, we are off to experience the secret season for 4 nights. If you know us, you know we can't just do the Grand Canyon and then fly home...we have to find all of the other fun places in the surrounding area and experience them also. And that is what we are doing. The Rahns don't relax on vacation, we VACATION HARD and relax when we get home.
Here are our hopes and tentative plans for this adventure:
- Land in Las Vegas (save Vegas for another visit)
- visit Hoover Dam
- Get our Kicks on Route 66
- 3 nights outside the Grand Canyon National Park
- Hike to Ooh Aah Point
- Sunrise and Sunset views
- New Year's Eve fun
- visit to Antelope Canyon in Page, AZ
- visit to Horseshoe Bend
- Sunset Crater National Monument
- Wutapki National Monument
- Montezuma's Castle National Monument
- fly home from Phoenix
Stay tuned for Seldom a Dull Moment with the Rahns....starting tomorrow at 5:00 am as we begin our Grand Winter Vacation - the Sequel!
