Day 2: The Rahns visit Lamanai - It's Simply UnBelizeable!

Today was simply unBelizeable! We had a 5:00 wake-up call and headed to breakfast down the beach at Estel's By the Sea. They open at 6:00 and it was a great, filling breakfast to get us ready for our day with the Mayan Ruins.

After breakfast we came back and got our stuff, to meet our taxi, We got to our small airport and got on our 10 seater to take is to Orange Walk, Belize. It was about a 20 minute flight to the middle of the Sugar Cane district on mainland Belize. We later found out that there is a big sugar cane factory here that is owned by Americans and exports sugar to many different places around the world.

We were met by Colin from Ecotours and he drove us 5 minutes through the sugar cane to the boat landing to prepare for our jungle cruise to Lamanai Ruins

It was about an hour boat ride and beautiful - it's the rainy area of Belize, so we passed through a few showers on our way.

Crocodile on a log thanks to Don's zoom lens!

Katie took a quick nap

as we arrive
We arrived at Lamanai and stayed for about 2 hours. Colin was still our guide and he showed us 3 temples and shared all of the history with us

the tree was nicknamed Horse Balls due to the shape of the fruit

We found some wild monkeys while walking around - Don's zoom lens was able to capture them beautifully!

High Temple was the third one we visited and the one that we were encouraged to climb to the top of. I stayed on the bottom and took pictures while Don, Katie and Carleigh climbed...

After a delicious Mayan lunch of rice, beans, jerk chicken and fruit we headed back and reversed our trip...

After we got back to The Phoenix, we relaxed a bit because it was raining outside and then Don, Carleigh and Katie headed to the free painting class

Happy hour tonight was brought to you by Rum Punch....not a favorite of either of us!

After happy hour, dinner time...tonight it was The Sandbar. This was a fun restaurant close by that was at the bottom of a Hostel. Great pizza and wings for dinner tonight.

After dinner we ventured out fo find D and E's Custard - it is a fun little ice cream shop owned by an older American couple who relocated here 20 years ago. After talking to them we found out that they came from Pennsylavania...Meadville, PA very close to Erie where Don is from and they actually knew some common people. We had some fun talks about Erie and the snow they get and then headed back to the room for the night.

Today was a great day - lots of activitiy and a typical Rahn vacation day. Tomorrow has no plans yet, so we shall see what unfolds! Maybe a pool day, maybe a golf cart rental....who knows!!

Stay Tuned as we continue to explore Belize!
